Self reflection

Writing, to me, is something I have never really thought about too deeply. It has always been like second nature. When i’m placing down words on the sheet of paper or typing up a document, it’s just like i’m talking out loud, but instead of the words coming out of my mouth, they come out on a screen or in lead. It’s a very pure form of art for me, just straight what comes out of my head. And although that alone has led me to a very good place in terms of the quality of writer that I am, It is still very raw, and through this semester, I’ve seen that there is a lot more to writing that meets my own eye. Like an AI robot writing a perfect essay about an experience that I went through personally, I realized that when it comes to writing at a basic level, it’s not about the content of the story or the news in the article, the theme of the book or the gist of the plot, it’s about how you tell it, and having fun making it. To start off the semester we started with something that I had never done before, but was a very fun way to do an icebreaker was an interview project. I did this project with my good friend since the start of our college career, Leandro. We are both musically inclined people, so questions came naturally to us. We spoke about our aspirations, the way we started, why we play, and we mixed in some other questions like what we expect out of the future and where we’d like to be. It was great for both of us. Having to come up with questions may have been the hardest part of it all, and I do believe that a lot of people felt the same way, but what I love about it is that it’s a challenge to be creative. That’s been true of every assignment this semester and it’s a mindset I’ve developed through courses like these. Especially with the next assignment we did, the Harlem review. I really enjoyed this one as well, because it was a great opportunity to try something new that I’ve wanted to try for a long time now, soul food. I went to a restaurant a friend told me about a couple years ago named Jacob’s Soul Food. However, the point of the review isn’t just about the food, but about the significance of it in African American culture. Across the entire country, Soul Food is a staple in African American communities, and the food branches from multiple different ethnicities and subcultures. That being said, I went to try the mac and cheese. Overall though, that paper was very fun to make, as I had to go out and almost “research” what it was that I was talking about, I do however believe that I could have done a better job at integrating the cultural significance into my paper, and I could have described the food a bit better, especially after seeing what that AI came up with, that’s one thing I will take with me into my future writing endeavors.
